Pattern Recognition

You see the same man twice: In his forties, curly hair, broad, probably Irish descent. The left hand picture sees him en profil, facing right, with his head turned back towards the camera. He wears a jacket (corduroy?) and a patterned shirt: judging by the colours this photograph is from the 1970ies. The right hand picture is black and white, and looks like it has been taken in the nineteenth century, in a formal sitting. Our subject has turned his head slightly to the right and gazes in the distance, his look reserved but seemingly content.
